Following is excerpts from MANY messages on HST high speed V.42
Thanks for the info Steve, BTW, would getting the v.42 upgrade allow me
then to connect with a hayes V.42?
If you mean the V series Hayes, yes... at 2400bps. If you mean the Hayes
Ultra, again yes... at 2400. Perhaps you are confusing v.42 with v.32?
===
No I was refering to the V.42 Hayes 9600.
===
you mean to tell me that upgrading a V series modem still only gets a
2400 baud connection. Then why would anyone want to do the upgrade, what
do I gain for the $50, and V.42 bis operation?
Will any Hayes 9600 modem connect to any USR modem at 9600? If not,
the what the hell good is a standard?
===
Paragraph 1... I have no idea what you are talking about! What exactly
are you upgrading, an HST?
Paragraph 2... Yep, an Ultra will connect at 9600 with a Dual Standard
using v.32. That is the standard. But the connects are at 9600, still ~50%
slower transfers than with the HST-HST connect.
As for what you gain with v.42, it is similar (but superior) to MNP. And
with v.42bis you get 'intelligent' compression. You can leave it on and
transfer ZIP files w/o the slowdown you see with MNP5. It senses the
files is compressed and doesn't try to out-compress Phil Katz. Now, that IS
smart!
One thing that might help is to switch to &K3. Your &K1 gives you MNP5
which you DON'T want.

Using a 14.4k HST, I always get my fastest transfer speeds with &K0
and ZmodemMobyTurbo...if you want text to scroll fast however, you
will need to have compression on, so I would suspect you are right
about the &K3 setting, it does make text fly....

Yep unless you &A3 you will connect fine with V.42 but it won't show on
the connect message. It's getting to have so much info that the dialer
windows on most prg's don't room to display the whole connect string.
